How to Read a Water Meter

The first thing you need to do is locate your water meter.  It is usually to be found in a concrete box marked "WATER" in the sidewalk or parkstrip (between the curb and the sidewalk) directly in front of your home.

Remove the lid from the concrete box.  You can lift this cover up by using a large heavy-duty screwdriver or some similar metal rod.

Inside you will see a metal meter with a metal lid.  Lift up this lid and you will see a dial very similar to the odometer in your car.  This number measures the cubic feet of water flowing through your meter.

How to Check for a Leak

If you think you might have a leak, do the following to check:
  1. Read your water meter and note the reading.
  2. Do not use any water for 2 hours.  Do not use the dishwasher, clothes washer, toilet, etc. during this time.
  3. After 2 hours read the water meter again.  If the dial has moved you have a leak and need to contact a plumber as soon as possible to avoid a high water bill.
